YKI Intermediate Speaking – How Are Themes Distributed in the Exam?
The YKI intermediate level (keskitaso) speaking exam is one of the most nerve-wracking parts of the Finnish language proficiency test. The exam consists of four parts: reagointi (reacting), dialogi (dialogue), kertominen (narration), and mielipide (opinion). But which themes are most likely to come up?
We analyzed 206 practice tasks from the Gimara textbook – one of the most popular YKI preparation materials – to find out how tasks are distributed across the seven official exam themes.
The Seven Themes and Their Weight
The YKI speaking exam draws from seven possible themes. Every task relates to one of these:
| Theme | Reagointi | Dialogi | Kertominen | Mielipide | Total | Weight |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1. People & Close Ones | 18 | 12 | 4 | 11 | 45 | 21.8% |
| 6. Free Time & Hobbies | 18 | 8 | 9 | 5 | 40 | 19.4% |
| 4. Work & Education | 18 | 4 | 4 | 7 | 33 | 16.0% |
| 2. Everyday Life | 16 | 5 | 5 | 4 | 30 | 14.6% |
| 5. Health & Wellbeing | 13 | 2 | 6 | 4 | 25 | 12.1% |
| 3. Nature & Environment | 8 | 3 | 3 | 3 | 17 | 8.3% |
| 7. Society | 8 | 2 | 2 | 4 | 16 | 7.8% |
| Total | 99 | 36 | 33 | 38 | 206 | 100% |
The Top 3 Themes Cover 57% of All Tasks
Three themes account for more than half of all practice material:
- People & Close Ones (Ihminen ja lähipiiri) – 22% – family, friends, relationships
- Free Time & Hobbies (Vapaa-aika ja harrastukset) – 19% – sports, culture, travel, media
- Work & Education (Työ ja koulutus) – 16% – workplace, colleagues, studies
If you have limited time to prepare, focus on these three themes first.
Task Type Distribution
The four exam sections are not equally represented in the preparation material:
- Reagointi (Reacting) – 99 tasks (48%) – short, quick reactions to everyday situations
- Mielipide (Opinion) – 38 tasks (18%) – argue and justify your viewpoint
- Dialogi (Dialogue) – 36 tasks (18%) – longer conversations with audio recordings
- Kertominen (Narration) – 33 tasks (16%) – free speech on a topic for 1–2 minutes
Reagointi is by far the most common practice type. This makes sense: in the actual exam, the reagointi section contains several short situations, while dialogi and kertominen are longer individual tasks.
How to Use This Information
1. Prioritize the Big Three
Practice especially everyday situations about people, free time, and work. These themes have the highest probability of appearing in your exam.
2. Drill Reagointi Extensively
Reagointi requires quick, natural reactions to various situations. The more scenarios you practice, the more naturally you'll respond in the exam.
3. Don't Ignore the Smaller Themes
Society (Yhteiskunta) and Nature (Luonto) have less material, but they can still appear in the exam. Make sure you can at least discuss the basics of every theme.
4. Practice with Audio
In the dialogi section, you hear the other person's speech from a recording. Practice responding to audio – not just reading written text.
